The Legacy of Carlo Cercignani: from Kinetic Theory to Turbulence Modeling

May 25, 2020 – May 29, 2020

Scientific program

This scientific conference is dedicated to the figure of Carlo Cercignani, on the tenth anniversary of his death.

Cercignani, who was one of the leading world experts on kinetic theories and Boltzmann equation, for most of his life worked, taught and conducted his research at the Department of Mathematics of the Polytechnic of Milan.

The conference will be a meeting occasion for the many different areas of kinetic theory which are still currently under development (mathematical, physical and numerical), to all of which Cercignani gave many and highly significant contributions.

The aim of the scientific program is to valorize the amplitude and transversality of Carlo Cercignani's interests as developed during his scientific career, by proposing contributions on the following topics:

a) mathematical and numerical methods for kinetic equations;

b) applications of kinetic theory to microdevices;

c) kinetic models for gas mixtures;

d) granular bodies modelling;

e) applications of kinetic theories to social sciences;

f) theory and applications of relativistic Boltzmann equation;

g) Monte Carlo and Lattice Boltzmann simulation methods;

h) statistical mechanics and dynamical systems.

Some of the leading experts on these fields will be among the speakers, in view of the international level of this Conference and the world fame of Carlo Cercignani.

The program will also include further contributions from an area of Cercignani's work: development of turbulence models, used in particular for Large Eddy Simulation.
